I have always enjoyed arts and crafts, from childhood all the way to adulthood. I learned to paint from watching my Grandmother at a young age. I started out with acrylic on canvas, then acrylic on wood. Later I tried my hand at sewing, screen printing, molding, casting plaster, home decor, refurbishing furniture, etc. I was having success selling my physical items in different shops, but in 2014 I found out i was pregnant! The pregnancy was rough at times and I had trouble keeping up with all my orders. I ended up quitting my day job, and had to close my art shops due to my morning sickness. In July 2015, after 40 hours of labor...my beautiful baby girl Skyler was born and she changed our lives.
Meanwhile, the stress of being a one income family was starting to take its toll. I decided to start selling art again when Skyler was one month old. I whipped up a few items, but found that instead of a few hours to complete a handmade item, it was taking me a few weeks due to my constant stopping to care for her. Needless to say, I couldn't run a business like that. So, once again the shops were closed. My wonderful husband worked hard and brought in enough money to pay the bills, but we were building zero savings. I wanted to start a savings account for our daughter, but that wasn't an option. It broke my heart not to be able to save for her future. I wracked my brain thinking of how I could make money for her from home, and also not have to spend hours slaving over a handmade item. It took me a while, but one day it hit me...Digital prints! (Duh) I can spend time making a nice digital print once and sell it multiple times, and don't need to pack the baby up and go to the post office!
All of the proceeds of this shop will be going into an account for my baby girl Skyler, hence the name of the shop: SkylersFortune. The word "fortune" conjures up thoughts of wealth and the future, it's the perfect description of what I am trying to do for her. One day when she graduates, or maybe on her wedding day, we will surprise her with the bank account...Something I wish my parents had done for me.
